Archery

Archery is the practice or skill of shooting arrows with the use of a bow. Archery has historically been used for hunting and combat but today its main use is that of a recreational activity. Archery is often practiced at many outdoor activity centres in the UK.

Example Session Structure .

  • Introduction of Archery. Give background information and discuss previous experiences.
  • Carry out a visual inspection of the range (if not carried out pre-session) then explain both the range and participant safety rules.
  • Demonstration and Explanation of bow and arrow and the correct technique for shooting (position, loading the bow, aiming etc).
  • Individual participation in activity. The instructor should supervise the group, ensuring that participants are using the correct technique for shooting and following safety rules at all times.
  • Games. In an hour session, participants should be realistically aiming to shoot a minimum of 12 arrows each. If you have enough time then introduce a game to the group.

Range Safety .

  • Non-active group members must remain behind the waiting line when observing
  • Group members must only approach the shooting line if instructed to do so by the session instructor
  • Participants must never cross the shooting line
  • Participants must not shoot at the same target
  • Bows and arrows must be only ever be pointed down the range towards the targets, no matter whether they are loaded or not
  • Participants must stop all activity if they hear a 'stop' command

Participant Safety .

  • Long hair must be tied back or tucked into tops
  • All jewellery to be removed when participating

Scoring

Scoring is based on the following:

  • Outer White ring: 1 point
  • Rising by 1 point each time to Inner Gold ring: 10 points

Scoring should only be introduced if there is a high probability of each participant achieving a score.

Tips .

  • Participants should receive direct instruction when shooting their first arrow. This ensures that the participant is aware of safety practices and has an understanding of the correct technique before shooting solo.
  • As the session progresses, participants should be encouraged to evaluate their own performance and work towards improvement in shooting technique. Instructors should be available to coach participants and offer guidance.
